Shades of white

White #1

These images are from the outskirts of East Lund, where I live, along the route I have started to take when running. The area is not new to me, but definitely unexplored, and usually, when running, I always spot images that I would like to make but can’t because I wear no camera… This time I decided to make a walk along the same route and bring my camera with me. It was cold and windy, and the latter made the snow on the fields smooth as if it had been sanded with a fine grained sandpaper. My black and white heart just melted.

Ove, I love these minimalist b&w photos. The sky and snow is so soft yet there is abundant detail and contrast in trees, pole and grass. Wonderful captures which need to be framed and hanging on a wall somewhere so they can be admired each time passed. Beautiful work!

Thanks, Earl, The light was rather dull, but at the same time the air was completely crisp and clean, so I was able to capture some detail also on distant objects. I might consider printing and hanging them since one of them even got sanctioned by Karin, she often think I’m a bit too black & white. :)

  3. Wow, I love the second one. Simple and yet powerful! I can see why your heart melted.

My favorites would by 1+3 – is number three a Lensbaby shot? Very tranquil, even melancholic.

  5. Ove says:

Thanks, Monte! I’m glad to also see you here! :)
Thomas, thanks, all three of them were shot with the same lens, a Summilux 25 (50 mm equiv.)

the middle one I’d print the middle one. Good work Ove.

Though I like them all, I simply love number 3! I’d print that one on several different papers to get the right feel.

I’ve been meaning to stop by here and tell you that. For some reason your site is blocked at work as a social networking site. Go figure! :-)

Wonderful snow series, as is the ‘scarecrow’ one. With Paul I share the preference for #3 – that enhancing work of the wind-driven snow is fabulous, natures way of enhancing with white.

I like all three but especially #2 . . . I’d make a HUGE print of that one.

  10. Ove says:

    Thanks, both Markus and Chris!
I might have to consider selling copies of these and get filthy rich. :)
Enough kidding. I really like working with the snow, and usually you hit rather well by over-exposing two stops. That’s the golden rule you learn living at these latitudes, but of course, it is extremely easy to blow out all shades of white, this way.

I’m especially fond of the first image at the top – so expansive and so simple, all at once. Great work – I think I can appreciate it now that Spring is coming around my neck of the woods – before, it was just a painful reminder. :)

  12. Ove says:

Exactly, the same is happening here. That very field is almost free from snow now, but the soil is still frozen. We have to give it another week or two. In a month, we are going to cry of appreciation when seeing these images. :-D
