Coffee break

The coffee house mirror

There will be a lot going on the coming months, since me and my family have decided to move a few blocks. The place were we are going is not in top shape, to make an understatement, meaning I’ll be busy pretending being a handyman until Christmas…. What have we done?

One of the tools I’ll carry with me will of course be my camera. I did document the making of the small garden I have today, but didn’t make anything out of the results. The pictures are interesting to me, in retrospect, but don’t really stands out by themselves, as a story. There was nothing to say more than I loved the plain beauty of the plants and flowering. The house must be renovated, and that’s not interesting at all to document, as I feel it. The new garden, though… It will take a while before I start digging into it, so there’s plenty of time to ponder about if there’s a story to tell in that and if I should make a photographic journey out of it.

The keys will be hand-over the first of October and might result in me being more absent and off for coffee breaks. But I will definitely need to continue my photography and hanging out with all you wonderful bloggers that I learnt to know during the last year, since all this is like balm for my soul, which working on a house hardly won’t be. Hopefully, It won’t be that much work…. No, I’m not scared…

Ove, best of luck with the new house and the move. I think the insights you’ll have during this process may be more interesting (to you and us) then you now believe. I look forward to the events you share.

Thanks, Earl! And you’re right, this is all new to me, so what do I know what’s interesting or not. I’m sure I will come up with something to say and show around this when the time is in and the hell breaks lose.

Good luck, Ove. Here, they call those houses: In need of some TLC (Tender Loving Care), a ‘fixer-upper’, or a house with ‘a lot of potential’. All are euphemisms for: You’re going to have to work really hard to get it the way that you want! LOL!

Perhaps you could do a project of photographing the house during it’s transition. Your first impressions, the emptiness before you move it, the changes, the finale. I just love giving other people work to do! :-)

Another popular euphemism here for a house that needs a great deal of “sweat equity” is “charming cottage”. I have great confidence in you, Ove, but sympathize with all the work you are facing. Part of your budget may go to pain killers and ice packs for aching muscles. :)

Please, please record the story for us. You can see that you have fans clamoring for a slide show, maybe an e-book—some record of this splendid adventure.

LoL! You are spot on both Paul and Anita. We have similar ways of describing such houses, and estate agents just love to come up with new flowery ones. There is actually a trend here in Sweden to purchase such houses and renovate it bottom-up. Kind of a life-style, almost. I’m not that person, to us it was the money that has to be invested that was steering. I would have rather continued with what I usually do. :-)

About that idea of yours, Paul, I have been thinking about it. I’ll might give it a go. As usually, I have to find out what tone and viewpoint to use. I’m just like that in everything I do……and I don’t want it to be a how-to story…

Anita, manual slide shows might be an option, since this is supported on my blog since a few weeks back… How to mount a sink, the fascinating details behind the scenes, details on angles, light and proper aperture and what shutter speed you need to freeze a drill.

Thanks for your enthusiastic proposals and requests. I’m a bit more inspired about this, now. :-)

@Anita: LOL! Charming cottage. That means very small and cramped! :-) I do like ‘sweat equity’!!! I’ve never heard that one before.

Ove! OF COURSE we are going to document this cool, exiciting new process. We’d be crazy if we didn’t. I’ll do it from my perspective and you from yours.

Ah, so you read my blog, Karin. Makes me happy! :-)
And yep, we would be crazy not making something photographic out of this.

    Ah, just install a webcam… ;)

But congratulations and good luck with rebuilding things! On the positive side, such an endeavor might be rather creative, you might end up with a very personalized house.

Yeah, we should maybe use the video camera in our mobiles… Thanks! :)

  • Welcome to my blog about this and that – ditt & datt in Swedish. The topics you'll find here are not always that general, though. You wont find anything on football, for instance. Moreover, all the light will most often be on photographs I made. In fact, if I tell something I find worthwhile telling, I usually stick a few of my photographs to the story. You could almost say this is about photography, and in a way you're right, it is. But it is also about what I see.
